Resource Configuration Scripts
After init has been started, the remaining startup tasks in the system—the ones that start all the services and operating system processes—are handled by the resource configuration scripts. These scripts are compartmentalized based on their functions, and are all kept inside the /etc/rc.d directory.

The resource configuration scripts in the modern versions of FreeBSD are all kept inside /etc/rc.d.
