Chapter 13. HOW TO DIAGNOSE WHY PEOPLE WON'T CHANGE

A few days before we began writing this chapter, Kevin was standing in line at his local Walgreens store to buy a few items. In front of him at the register was a frail looking man who was pulling a portable oxygen tank, and the tubes were inserted into his nose. As the clerk waited on him, he asked for three packs of cigarettes. Kevin's immediate thought was that the man was certainly buying the cigarettes for someone else. That thought was reversed when the customer thanked the clerk for carrying his brand while fumbling in his pockets to find the money to pay for his purchases.
