4 Computers and Communications
Innovations in transportation, and related technologies, as outlined in Chapter 3 drove economic growth in the US for quite some time. However, the dominance of this ecosystem was displaced by the mid-twentieth century by computers and communications. The seeds of this transformation have a rich history (Isaacson, 2014), including Franklin and electricity in 1752 (Isaacson, 2003), Bell and the telephone in 1876 (Grosvenor & Wesson, 2016), and Edison and electric lighting in 1880 (Jonnes, 2003). However, the market innovations in computers and communications emerged in the 1940s.
