Organizational Commitment
Researchers have studied commitment in a myriad of contexts, but the focus here is commitment in the work setting. There are many definitions of organizational commitment, with the simplest being an employee’s expressed intent to stay. Wiener (1982) points out that behaviors resulting in organizational commitment possess the following characteristics: (1) they reflect some personal sacrifice made for the sake of the organization, (2) they show persistence, and (3) the commitments indicate a personal preoccupation with the organization, such as devoting a great deal of time to organization-related activities.
