The Coaching Role
Comparing the coaching roles of health care leaders to athletic coaches sheds further light on the concept. There are many similarities, although also some striking differences, such as this major one: most individuals on a sports team are highly motivated to be there—not always the case in the workplace. Similarities in these different arenas, however, are striking: the coach recruits and selects players, determines the game plan, works with the team to improve performance by giving feedback, continually evaluates the team’s performance, and motivates and encourages the team or the individual.
