1 The birth of occupational safety, safety and social struggle

Occupational safety is a topic of all times. The dangers of mining were described many centuries ago. This chapter shows that fundamental and structural interest in workers’ safety and causes of occupational accidents arose at the end of the nineteenth/ beginning of the twentieth century. This was the century of steam engines, the first Industrial Revolution. Also, the first sociological and empirical investigations started on living and working conditions, leading to the first social legislation and labour laws, and marked the birth of occupational safety.
