Strategists are a bit like economists. Put a dozen in the same room and they will deliver thirteen solutions. And get them to agree on a Top Twenty?!
Arguably one name would come up every time: Michael Porter has had more influence on strategy in the last three and a half decades than any other strategist. In my 2013 book, Key Strategy Tools: The 80+ Tools for Every Manager to Build a Winning Strategy, four out of the 88 tools assessed were Porter’s. No other guru had more than one.
