Biomass fuel transport and handling

Abstract

This chapter describes the importance of solids handling to successful biomass processing and valorisation. It illustrates the relative costs and complexity involved in the solids-handling equipment within a solid biomass generation facility, and describes why so many problems arise from suboptimal solids-handling equipment design – a problem that arises with many solids-handling projects but is especially acute with biomass. A taxonomy of biomass fuels, based on their behavioural characteristics, is described; this forms the basis of a means for deciding upon suitable patterns of solids-handling equipment for the application in question. ...
