Abstract
The integrity of power-generation plants is critical for their continued safe and economic operation. Changes in the solid fuels used in combustion plants will affect the operating environments for components all along the fuel paths (i.e. before and after combustion). The complex degradation mechanisms that have been found for many of these components are often classified in terms of abrasion–erosion, deposition or corrosion, or by their synergistic interactions (e.g. erosion–corrosion, corrosion–fatigue).
