THE WEEK BEFORE 9/11, I WAS INVITED WITH A GROUP OF Deloitte senior partners to spend three days at the Army War College and on the Gettysburg Battlefield to discuss strategy and leadership in the future. This was my first experience at the graduate school for the US Army in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

As a young man, I had a very limited military background (only a year of required ROTC at the University of Illinois when I was an undergraduate), and I came to the Army War College with low expectations. I expected that the Army would be very hierarchical and rigid, command-and-control.
