Routing Metrics and Protocols

Routing protocols can essentially be broken down into two types: link-state routing protocols and distance-vector routing protocols. Although both types of routing protocols forward packets, the way they go about it separates them into two distinct groups.

Routing protocols calculate a variety of metrics, values, and indicators to rank available paths to certain logical addresses on a LAN or WAN. Each different routing protocol has a unique algorithm that factors a different value or set of values to develop the cost of a link, with the smaller value (lowest cost) indicating the better route choice.
