Chapter 8 presented a brief overview of the unique challenges of ad hoc wireless sensor networks. In this chapter we consider these problems in detail. In addition to describing the challenges, we contrast the characteristics and capabilities of existing sensors with the properties of traditional networking environments. By understanding the unique aspects of ad hoc networks, the protocols presented in Chapter 10 become more understandable.
