Preface to the Third Edition
This book is based on lectures given by the authors to first year students at the University of Glasgow. We record, with sadness, the passing of Wilson Stothers who died during the preparation of the third edition.
The object of the book is to provide, in a single volume, a unified treatment of first year topics fundamental to university mathematics. Pull mathematical rigour has not been attempted but the general approach is suitable for students aiming for an honours degree in mathematics.
