On August 2, 2006—months before Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone—Elon Musk made an announcement: “The overarching purpose of Tesla Motors (and the reason I am funding the company) is to help expedite the move from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy.”
The auto industry barely took notice of what Musk called his master plan. Ten years later, on July 20, 2016, “master plan, part deux” promised a full line of products with a self-driving capability that, through fleet learning, would be ten times safer than manual driving. The reactions were mostly skeptical, from “cash flow sinkhole” to “overly ambitious” to “no different than what the incumbents have announced.”
