While I was writing this book, the US entered a new political era. In fact, combined with the UK’s vote to leave the European Union and the strength of various right-wing populist candidates on the continent, there was a broader political shift around the world. On the surface, these changes manifested themselves in ways that directly contradicted future first goals. In the US, the reality of climate change was outright denied by the head of the federal agency responsible for protecting the country’s environment.
