UP TO THIS POINT, WE HAVE LOOKED at the longevity of technological change, explored some of the unexpected ways that technology evolves and affects our lives, examined some of its downsides, and undercut the prevailing high-tech myths. We can now appreciate some of the forces that cause our distorted view of technology: myopia (which causes the birthday-present syndrome) and hype in the press. Now that we know what is wrong and why we see things that way, we can begin to discover how technological change really works, and we will find a new model to replace the debunked exponential one.
