Abstract

While power systems that can legitimately be called microgrids—locally controlled power systems that can function either as grid connected or as electrical islands—have existed since the dawn of the industry, their modern development has mostly occurred in this century. This chapter examines the nature of the technical changes taking place and envisions an alternative microgrid focused paradigm for the future power sector.
