Abstract
Decision making is a critical aspect of human lives and is the most basic human activity wherein the best alternative is chosen from a set of given alternatives. The process of choosing from a set of alternatives is influenced by human subjectivity and, thus, depends on the value as well as the preferences of a decision maker. It is noteworthy that remaining neutral or deciding not to choose from any option from the given set of alternatives is also categorized as decision making. The field of decision making is useful in many fields, such as management, life sciences, engineering, and technology.
This chapter discusses the concept of fuzzy sets in decision making. Fuzzy sets were introduced in their modern form by Zadeh, wherein fuzzy sets were analyzed from the use of classical Boolean sets to a multivalued logic [1, 2]. The main idea behind fuzzy decision making is that the outcome is unknown, and the decision is made under uncertainty.
This chapter will give an overview of the use of fuzzy set theory in major types of decision-making problems. An introduction to fuzzy sets with their properties, extension, and membership function will also be discussed. Further, the multicriteria decision-making model will be discussed with a major emphasis on multiattribute decision making. Finally, some of the applications of fuzzy logic in sectors, such ...
