It is a widely known but likely apocryphal story that upon the first screening of L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat that moviegoers, unfamiliar with the capabilities and language of film, were so spooked seeing a train coming for the camera that they scrambled out of the theater in panic. Moviegoers today are more sophisticated, having been immersed in the form their entire lives. One does not need to have explained how a film works to appreciate it. Games, on the other hand, live or die by their ability for players to understand their unique characteristics.
