The number of times per second a monitor refreshes the display is known as it's vertical refresh rate, or just refresh rate. The refresh rate of a monitor is measured in hertz (Hz). So, a monitor that can refresh the display 30 times per second has a refresh rate of 30 Hz. Many monitors refresh at 60 Hz, however, it is becoming common to see monitors with refresh rates of 120 Hz or even 240 Hz.
It is important to realize that the refresh rate of a monitor has nothing to do with the performance of a game or program.
