How to Play This Book

In this chapter, you’ll learn:

In FarmVille, your role is clear—you’re pretending to be a farmer. In a fantasy roleplaying game like World of Warcraft, you can be a healer, protector or a damage-dealing spellcaster. Even in the more abstract game of chess, you can become a military strategist. Understanding the role of your customer is important for games, and it is also key for you to understand why different people interact with your business. You'll learn more about this in Chapter 4 when you read about personas, but for now you can learn more about this concept by seeing how it applies to the book.

As you progress through this chapter, you explore what interests you about games and how that information relates to the content of the book. Learning how to explore roles can give you a better way to understand your customers. More important, this can also be a form of self-enlightenment: People often enjoy learning things about themselves. This information can be surprising, self-validating, or serve as a tool to help you navigate an unfamiliar landscape.
