Introduction

Why this book?

The teaching of literacy permeates everything we do in our primary schools – it has no boundaries. As teachers, our aim for the children is that when they leave us to enter the next phase of their educational journey they will have a love of all aspects of literacy, combined with the requisite skills. That is to say, they are confident speakers, understand how to listen actively and attentively, can write for a range of purposes and audiences and read both books and screens for purpose and for pleasure.

To quote Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations, ‘Literacy is … the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realise his or her full potential.’
