Playing Live with GarageBand Amps and Effects

I rarely play live these days, but I play in my office/studio almost every day. And since I have had a GarageBand-capable device nearby for decades, I no longer own a guitar amp or effects pedals. I rely entirely on GarageBand (or MainStage, which you hear more about later in the chapter) to provide the amp tones and effects I need.

When I feel like playing, I plug my guitar into whichever device is close at hand, launch GarageBand, create a real instrument track for my guitar, and then choose the guitar preset I need.

Easy peasy. My guitar sounds fantastic, and as a bonus, it’s quieter and more reliable than any amp and pedal board combination I’ve owned.

I have played close to a dozen two-hour live sets with The Macworld All-Star Band playing through GarageBand with physical amp or effects. The process worked great, and I show you how to do it in this chapter. Which is to say, this chapter details the ins and outs of playing your guitar or bass without an amp or stomp boxes.
