Abstract
This chapter provides a brief historical overview of garment sizing and fit. It introduces and discusses issues including the geometry of the human form and the ideal figure, real or imagined, and how this has influenced the approach that manufacturers take when making garments to fit the human body. The challenges associated with garment sizing and fit are considered, and the use of garment size charts and the development of sizing systems and fitting models representative of target markets to address these are explained.
