Professor Gorur Govinda Raju obtained a BEng degree from the University of Bangalore (India) and a PhD from the University of Liverpool (England) in 1963. He has held the Leverhulme Fellowship and the Leverhulme Travel Fellowship at the University of Liverpool during graduate studies. He then worked as a research engineer at Associated Electrical Industries (Manchester, England), where he was awarded a research premium for one of his research papers. He joined the Department of High Voltage Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1965 and became professor and chairman during the years 1975–1980.
