Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a polar, electron-attaching, symmetrically bent molecule that has 23 electrons. Its electronic polarizability is 3.36 × 10−40 F m2, dipole moment is 0.316 D, and ionization potential is 9.586 eV. Selected references for data are shown in Table 33.1. The vibrational excitation energies are (Benoit and Abouaf, 1991): v1 = 163 meV (symmetrical stretch), v2 = 93 meV (bending), and v3 = 20 meV (asymmetrical stretch).
