A Contextualized History From the 1890s to the 1980s

INTRODUCTION

This chapter’s purpose is to provide a foundational sketch of the historical participation of women within the mainstream of music production from the late nineteenth century to the early 1980s. The context of the survey is Anglo-American, in keeping with the geographical focus of the bulk of the academic literature concerning music production that has accrued to date.
