What have companies come up with to replace the old career ladder? Not much. Much beloved of human resources professionals, the concept of employability is meant to provide the basis for a new psychological contract between workers and employers. With companies no longer able to guarantee long-term job security for employees, employability represents a shift to a new deal whereby employers offer shorter job tenure with an undertaking to provide skills development and training which will make staff more employable later.
