Early life of Johann Gregor Mendel (1822–1884)

Gregor Mendel was born in Czech Republic. His parents were poor farmers and could not afford good education for an academically bright Mendel. He was admitted to the Augustinian monastery in Brno in 1843. The monastery funded the formal education of Mendel and after graduating he was ordained a priest and appointed to a teaching position in a local school.
