20.1 Introduction
Agricultural research after the green revolution period has significantly improved crop productivity, which has led to increased food supplies in developed and developing countries. Improved plant breeding approaches and chemicals has enabled self‐sufficiency in major staple food crops and food security. However, climatic changes and reduced agricultural biodiversity has negatively affected the nutrient balance in major crops, increasing malnutrition in most of the world population. Nutritional deficiency is a major concern worldwide, affecting around 3 billion people particularly in developing nations (McGuire 2015).
