The Scary Dolly Zoom
What does it look like?
It’s an unsettling effect used to distort the visual perception of the image. The subject is meant to stay the same size in the frame as a continuous perspective distortion happens around it. The most recognizable shift is the background changes size and focus relative to the subject.
How’s it done?
It’s achieved in-camera by pulling away from a still subject while the lens zooms in, or vice-versa. You can use a dolly, Steadicam, or it can be handheld.
When should I use it?
It’s a great visual tool to use in those moments of realization when everything changes in the world of the character.
