Chapter 4. CAD: Draw or Model Something
In the wonderful world of CNC, every project begins with a digital design. If you’re already familiar with CAD, or computer-aided design software, then you’re already well on your way to getting started with CNC. If you’re new to drawing on a computer, don’t worry—it’s easier than you think—and there are dozens of free options available.
While it’s entirely possible to machine 3D models, most CNC machining projects are designed in two dimensions using CAD or vector graphics software. Then the magic of CAM software allows you to assign separate operations to individual shapes within your drawing. (We’ll discuss machining 3D models and using CAM software in Chapter 5.)
