Up to this point, we have learned about soldering components that have two or more wire leads that are inserted into a printed circuit board (PCB). Now we are going to look at soldering surface-mount devices (SMDs), which is soldering components that lie directly on the PCB and may or may not have any wire leads. This type of soldering is called surface-mount technology (SMT) and is typically done with more advanced tools, and most often by a machine.
