9.2. Educational Barriers: Disparity in the Schools
Kristen was smart, driven, and, like her farming parents, extremely tenacious. During high school, she worked part-time at a bank, saving money for college. School was not a great place for Kristen. In seeking out a "better" public school, Kristen's parents enrolled her in school in a university town twenty miles away from the family farm by using a relative's home address as their own. At the "city" school, Kristen always felt like she stood out: her thrift-store or homemade clothes were plain, and children made fun of her rural drawl.
