THE CENTRALITY OF METAGENRE
In order to speak to and reach their national audiences, national cinemas have favored particular genres. The United States has used the western and the gangster films to explore its national mythology with an historical palate, the western, and a modern palate, the gangster film. Germany has preferred melodrama to explore contemporary themes and science fiction/horror to explore mythology in the future or the past. Italy has preferred the comedy/satire as an outlet for optimism and the melodrama as a lament about the past. These genres have been useful to speak to national audiences. To reach an international audience, the metagenre has become far more important.
