Globalization and the diaspora have emerged as two highly contested categories for defining the contemporary world. Globalization, which is often simply described as increasing global interconnectedness, is a complex concept, and has been defined differently by different scholars. For some, it is a liberating phenomenon, opening up the potential for greater connectedness and spread of human rights, health care and improved inter-cultural understanding worldwide (Beck 2000).
