The ongoing assertion of the right to self-determination and autonomy by the people of Kashmir has often been dubbed by the political class in India as a challenge to the secular, democratic, and ‘federal’ framework of its polity. In the absence of a proper analysis of the historical bases of their political alienation and political responses, the people of Kashmir have been labelled as anti-national fundamentalists who are under the influence of the global jehad forces. Even the moderates’ demand for the restoration of autonomy has been considered suspect.
