Gendered contexts and globalization in South Asia

Abstract:
This chapter examines the effects of globalization on gender and society in South Asian countries mainly Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. Global pressures for change have produced isomorphic effects on women in ways that perpetuate more of the same patriarchal practices disempowering women. The chapter focuses mainly on women in community since this represents the great majority of disempowered agency. The chapter outlines global expectations and a relational approach to examine gendered roles.
