‘Globalization’ is one of those extraordinarily protean terms that seems to be relevant, and is increasingly accepted as meaningful, everywhere. In it the absolute embrace of the core word, the ‘globe’ itself, struggles against the modification of the suffix, the process marked by ‘-ization’. A wide variety of possibilities slip through that slight disjuncture between the absolute and the potential: the possibility of active globe-making, discernment of a global teleology, mediation between the bits (the local) and the whole of the globe, reference to systems that span the globe, the ambition of constructing global concepts, the desire of tapping into the material (resources, labour, markets) ...
