Chapter 7
Decision Strategies
Chapter Summary
The VOTE model of decision making focuses on two questions: choice and explanation. That is, What does the agent want to do? and How can the agent justify his decision? Our decisionmaking model assumes that there are many ways of arriving at a decision, which may differ significantly in their underlying structure and rationale. In this chapter, we describe the set of decision strategies used by the VOTE program. Each strategy provides an answer to the two basic questions of choice and explanation. We also discuss an indirect strategy, DEEPER ANALYSIS, which is invoked when the other strategies fail. Finally, we present detailed statistics of VOTE’s performance.
