Introduction

Soon after graduating from my PhD in internet consumer psychology, I began to plan my next big project. I had just spent three years of my life working on my thesis, and I couldn’t wait to start afresh on something new. It was 2007. YouTube was just starting to become popular, and word was getting around about something called ‘social media’ and a new website called ‘Facebook’. More people were organising their lives on the internet than ever before – banking, shopping, planning, and now social. The internet was now firmly engrained into society, and I was excited to begin my career studying its effects on people.
