Modern GPUs, for the first time in computing history, put a data-parallel, streaming computing platform in nearly every desktop and notebook computer. A number of recent academic research papers—as well as other chapters in this book—demonstrate that these streaming processors are capable of accelerating a much broader scope of applications than the real-time rendering applications for which they were originally designed.
