16.1 Introduction
Polymers are materials composed of repeating units of monomers, either homogenously or heterogeneously polymerized based on the nature of the units being linked together. They have a wide range of applications in several fields of research and development, besides commercial uses. Biopolymers play a prominent role in the development of sustainable biodegradable and non-biodegradable production, and without disruption of the available resources. Biodegradable polymers are of the utmost importance because of their harmlessness to the environment [1]. With the advent of biodegradable polymers, bio-based polymers could be obtained from microbial sources like bacteria and fungi, plant sources, or algal sources. They can replace the currently available synthetic polymers that have hazardous effects on the environment [2]. They could be used for many applications like drug delivery, smart material production, anti-fouling, and metal chelation.
