Keep Distracting Objects Out of the Shot

Many of you have seen a live news report on location when a passerby waves vigorously at the camera from behind the standing reporter. The out-of-place movements distract our attention away from the main point of the report and the impact is lost. A small crew on a live news report cannot do much to prevent these distractions, but any nonlive shoot should allow for some control over the set. As a camera operator, it would be your job to verify that the frame was clean and that no objects, either moving or stationary, would prove to be a visual distraction for a viewing audience.
