In this chapter, we introduce a concept of granular time series—models of time series in which information granules play a central role. Information granularity is instrumental in arriving at human-centric models of high level of interpretability and transparency. We consider description, interpretation, and classification of time series by showing how a layered architecture of granular time series is developed. In the sequel, a granular classifier of time series with a granular feature space is discussed. The interpretability of time series is of significant interest in data mining and the granular time series makes a certain contribution to this area.
