WHILE THE PERCEPTION OF COLOR may be highly subjective,
there is no denying its power to stimulate and infl uence us. Even
the most seasoned designers, however, are often at a loss when
selecting colors, especially when the budget is tight and printing
is at a premium. The fi rst few categories here offer purely formal
options for two- and three-color palettes—sets of colors cho-
sen as partners because their optical interactions are especially
dynamic. Two-color palettes are excellent starting points for
branding or identity programs—if a given project already comes
with a corporate color or two, one of the simple palettes here
may be used for support. Even when full-color printing is an
option, limiting one’s color palette to two or three colors will
create a stronger impression. Audiences’ emotional and cul-
tural expectations play important roles in developing color for
products and services, as well as for projects of a metaphorical
nature. Colors based on time periods, moods, age groups, and
concepts as diverse as health care and telecommunications,
men’s grooming, and forestry are distilled here into palettes that
you can build on to create complex color systems in any project.
