Choices and Lists

Choices and lists both display a list of strings that can be selected. Whereas a list supports multiple selection, a choice allows only single selection of its items. Lists typically display one or more of their items at all times, while choices display only the selected item until they are activated, at which time a popup list of their items becomes available for making a selection.

Making a Choice: List or Choice?

It is often the case that choices and lists may be used interchangeably. The choice, if you will, whether to use a list or a choice in a given situation often depends upon the following:

  • The amount of screen real estate available

  • Whether it is desirable to display more than one item at all times
