This chapter covers the topic of Internet-connected devices, called the Internet of Things (IoT). The phrase “Internet of Things” was first coined in a 1999 presentation at MIT by Kevin Ashton.1 In 2008, the number of connected devices surpassed the number of humans on the planet at 8 billion,2 so the security of these devices is becoming increasingly important. The pace at which IoT devices are connected is staggering.
