Have you ever seen one of those dioramas in a natural history museum—the ones that feature a lifelike three-dimensional re-creation of a lost world or culture? I remember vividly the first time I saw one of the Native American dioramas at the Smithsonian in Washington. As I stood there and stared at the figures behind the glass—a woman holding an infant as she tended a fire, a man skinning a deer after returning from the hunt—I tried to imagine what the native people of early eighteenth century America were thinking.
