CHAPTER 4The mechanics of great change
We've established that transformation is difficult and considered the different transformation mindsets (such as being curious, open, ambitious, determined and resilient) that can make your change program more likely to succeed. It's now time to consider the actions that must be taken to address, mitigate and overcome these inherent difficulties. These actions are the mechanics of transformation.
All three elements of transformation are difficult in their own way. It's sometimes difficult to identify the weak signals of disruption, and to then extrapolate their impact on your own industry or company. It can also be difficult to make choices and craft an appropriate strategy to address these disruptive forces. The transformation mindsets mentioned in the previous section are well suited to seeking to identify and understand disruption, and for the development of creative and innovative strategies to respond to and address the resultant opportunities and threats that these disruptions will deliver.
Ultimately, the transformation will create an inevitable collision between the power of the status quo, the active resistance of certain executive personalities and the inherent change inhibitors associated with the company and how it operates. It is, of course, the leader and team who suggest and then drive significant change.
